Can you think of a time when you’ve worked with a GREAT leader? Someone who was inspiring, engaging, and who really made you feel like you were working towards something great or exciting?
Now can you think of a time when you’ve worked with an, ahem, not-so-great leader? Someone who was always “too” busy, maybe kinda rude, didn’t always know what was going on, and who spent more time on the golf course than they did managing their team?
What do you think were some key differences between the great leaders you’ve engaged with, and the — let’s say it like it is — terrible leaders?
Being a leader isn’t limited to the boardroom — you can be called to lead in many areas of your life, whether as a business owner, a parent, a member of your community or church — the list goes on!
And so, leadership is not just a position. It’s a way of showing up. It’s about taking responsibility for your actions, your team, and your mission.
It’s about setting an example, being a teacher, a friend, and a coach. It’s about giving 100% and being willing to do anything you ask of others.
But being a leader is not just about you. It’s about the people you lead. It’s about showing them the way and helping them grow, evolve, and be better. It’s about seeing in them what they don’t see in themselves and helping them develop that potential.
So, how do you become a leader? It starts with leading yourself every day, and asking yourself how you want to do that. What is your focus? What are you adding?
Getting clear on your vision will help create order and direction, and will enable you to communicate your goals to those you are leading.
But even the best leaders will have days where they lead poorly.
If you focus on what’s wrong, negative, and frustrating, that brings more of the same. The key is to recognize it and then shift.
Shift into how you want to lead and move forward.
We are all meant to be leaders in some way, and it starts with keeping ourselves in check — remembering that just like there is no “I” in team, there’s also no “I” in Leader.
If you feel like you’re ready to step up and lead and make a difference in the world, then you know where to start: be proactive, take initiative, and lead by example.
You must inspire and motivate your team, create a sense of purpose and direction, and create a culture of trust and transparency.
If you can do all these things, you’ll be on your way to becoming a great leader.
If this sounds like something you’d like to do but don’t know where to start, I’m here for you! I’ve been a not-so-great leader, a lost leader, and a just-figuring-it-out-as-I-go leader. I’ve been there, done that. I’ve learned what it takes to rise above the leadership woes and have done the dirty work. I can share with you what I’ve learned, and help you become the best leader you can be.
